Burnt Sugar Cake & Frosting Recipe

1½ C sugar
½C shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2½ C sifted flour
3 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
¾ C cold water
3 T Burnt Sugar Syrup* (See in Directions)

Burnt Sugar Frosting
3 T oleo
1 egg yoke, beaten
5 T burnt sugar syrup
2 T cream
4 C sifted confectionary sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Gradually add sugar to shortening, creaming thoroughly. Add vanilla, then eggs one at a time, beating after each. Add sifted dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with water, small amount at a time, beating after each addition. Add burnt sugar syrup and beat batter 4 minutes. Pour into 2 greased 9" pans. Bake at 375º for 20 minutes.

Burnt Sugar Syrup:
In heavy skillet melt 2 cups granulated sugar, stirring constantly. When sugar is clear brown syrup, remove from heat. Slowly add 1 cup boiling water. Return to low heat stir until syrup is smooth again. (Makes 1⅓ cup syrup)

Burnt Sugar Frosting:
Cream together oleo and beaten egg yoke. Beat in alternately burnt sugar syrup, cream, sifted confectionary sugar, and vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy enough to spread.
