1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs, well beaten
½ tsp. salt
4 c. sifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, add sugar and vanilla and continue creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Sift salt and flour and add to first mixture, using more flour if necessary to make a stiff dough. Chill at least 20 minutes. Roll ¼" thick; cut with cookie cutter. Sprinkle with sugar, if desired, and bake on ungreased cookie sheet in a 400º oven for about 10 minutes.

Mother got this recipe when we lived in Magnolia, Arkansas. These cookies have been made in the Ballard family every Christmas since then! They can be decorated with icing or sprinkled with colored sugar. A little (1/2 tsp.) almond extract can be added for a little different flavor.
