Brownie Batter:
½ cup butter
½ cup shortening
1 cup strong brewed coffee
¼ cup dark unsweetened cocoa
½ cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar (can reduce to 1½ cups)

Frosting:
½ cup butter
2¼ tbsp dark cocoa
¼ cup milk
3½ cups confectioner's sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 400ºF.

  • Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl.

  • In a large saucepan, combine butter, shortening, cocoa and coffee. Mix well and heat to boiling.

  • Pour into the flour and sugar mixture; mix well.

  • Add buttermilk, baking soda, eggs and vanilla; mix well.

  • Pour into a well-greased 11x17-inch cookie sheet and bake for 20 mins (or until toothpick comes out clean). For thicker cake-like brownies, bake in a well-greased 9x13-inch pan (adjust cooking time accordingly).




Frosting:

  • In a large saucepan, combine butter, cocoa and milk. Heat to boiling and mix until smooth.

  • Add confectioner's sugar and vanilla; mix until smooth.

  • Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as they come out of the oven.

  • Cool and cut into squares. Enjoy!
