Brine:
2 c salt (not iodized)
1 gal boiling water

Alum Water:
2 Tbsp alum
1 gal water (cold)

Ginger Water
2 Tbsp ginger
1 gal. Water

Pickling Mixture
1 pt vinegar
1 pt water
4 c sugar

1 c sugar
mixed pickling spices

Directions:
Directions:
Cool brine before pouring over cucumbers. Let set in brine two weeks, stirring every day. Rinse and cut in chunks. Pierce small cukes with fork. Let stand 24 hours in plain water. Drain off and let stand in alum water 24 hours. Drain off. Boil in alum water 24 hours. Drain off. Boil in ginger water 30 minutes. Drain immediately. Combine 1 pint vinegar, 1 pint water and 4 cups sugar. Bring to a boil and pour over cukes. Let stand 24 hours. Next day, drain liquid and add 1 cup sugar and mixed pickling spice to it. Heat and pour over cukes in jars and seal.
