"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. salt
2 cubes butter
1 egg

Directions:
Directions:
Whisk together: Brown sugar, white sugar, baking powder, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. (Continued next page.)

Use a pastry blender to mix 2 cubes of butter into the dry ingredients. Save 1/4 of that mixture for the topping

Beat one egg and mix into 3/4 of the dry ingredients and press the mixture firmly onto the bottom of an 9x13 baking pan

Over the crumb base spread about two cups of pitted and sliced plums (the little bluish purple ones are the best).

Scatter the remaining 1/4 crumb mixture evenly over the top of the plum slices. Bake at 375º for about 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the plums around the edges are bubbly

Enjoy warm and topped with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Arlene: Our grandparents came from Germany. Dad introduced our family to some of his favorite German foods, and Mom learned how to cook like a German. Two dishes became our family favorites: liver dumplings and pflaumenkuchen (we pronounced it floumakooka). I found a recipe for "Plum Crumble Bars" that is a lot like pflaumenkuchen. You should try it.
