1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup soft butter
1 c sugar
1 egg
3/4 c buttermilk
1 tsp Vanilla
1 3/4 c sifted flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c dry Cocoa
1 c shopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, butter, sugar, egg thoroughly (in mixer). (You can use all butter and not shortening, btw). Stir in buttermilk and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients together and then stir into butter mixture. I stir this by hand.. Stir in nuts.
Cover and chill for 1 hours.
Heat oven to 400. Drop round teaspoons full on greased cookie sheet about 2" apart. Bake 8-10 minutes until set. Front cooled cookies with icing. recipe below.
Makes about 3 1/2 doz.
BROWNED BUTTER ICING: Melt 1/4 butter in saucepan over low heat until golden brown. Blend in 2 cups sifted powdered sugar. Stir in about 2TB cream and 1 tsp vanilla.
