Ingredients: 1 cake of yeast 1 T. sugar 1/4 cup of lukewarm water 2 c of milk (scalded and cooled) 7 c. of sifted flour 1/3 cup of butter 1/2 cup of sugar 3/4 tsp. of salt 1 egg well beaten 1/2 cup dried fruit, nuts and raisins (type you put in fruit cake)

Directions:Dissolve yeast and 1 T of sugar in lukewarm water, Add milk and 4 c flour then beat until smooth. Cream butter and add sugar and salt then add to yeast mixture. Add egg, fruit and remaining flour and mix well. Knead lightly. Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk (about 2 1/2 hours if using regular yeast).
When well risen put on floured board. Divide the dough in 1/2 and cut one portion into 3 equal parts and roll on board with palm of hand into slender round strips. Braid the strips. Place on well greased baking sheet. Divide remaining dough into 6 equal parts and shape into 2 braids placing each braid on top of the the first. Let rise 1/2 hr. Brush with egg and t T cold water. Bake at 350º for 50 mins. |

Notes: This is a great bread to make for Christmas. You can use red and green fruit cake type fruit. I also add an icing to the top of the bread after baking and cooled. (10X sugar and water mixed and glazed on the bread). It is great to slice and toast/butter.
