1/3 c. butter
1 diced onion
1/4 c. flour
1 quart bottle of canned tomatoes
1 1/2 quarts of milk
1/2 t. baking soda (divided)
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Directions:
Saute' onions in melted butter. Stir in flour and add bottle of tomatoes. (if you don't like tomato chunks, you can blend with hand blender) Heat till warm...add 1/4 t. soda. Meanwhile add 1 1/2 quarts of milk to another sauce pan and heat thoroughly..Add the other 1/4 t. soda to milk mixture.
Slowly add tomato mixture to milk mixture. Soda helps to keep from curdling. Add salt and pepper to taste.

When we were kids we'd make bread chunks and toast under the broiler and also served with cheese chunks as well.

Really good served with grilled cheese sandwiches.
