Cake:
1 pkg. (1/4#) Sweet cooking chocolate
1/2 c. Boiling water
1 c. Butter or shortening
2 c. Sugar
4 Egg yolks, beaten
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 1/2 c. Sifted cake flour
1 tsp. Baking soda
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 c. Buttermilk
4 Egg whites, stiffly beaten

Frosting:
1 c. Evaporated milk
1 c. Sugar
3 Egg yolks
1/4 lb. Butter
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 1/3 c. Flaked coconut
1 c. Chopped pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Melt chocolate in the boiling water. Cool. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, beating after each addition. Add vanilla and melted chocolate and mix until blended. Sift flour with soda and salt. Add sifted dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk, beating after each addition until batter is smooth. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Place wax paper on the bottom of 3 - 9in. cake pans. Pour 1/3 of batter into each cake pan. Bake in moderate oven at 350º. 35 to 40 minutes. Cool before frosting.

Frosting:
Combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla in sauce pan. Cook over medium heat 12 minutes, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Remove from heat. Add coconut and pecans. Beat until cool and of spreading consistency. Makes enough to cover tops of the 3 cake layers. Do not frost sides of cake.
