1 lb.dried red kidney beans (soaked overnight, drained and cleaned of any rocks)
1 lb. dried pinto beans (soaked overnight, drained and cleaned of any rocks)
1 ham bone or 2-3 smoked ham hocks
2 c. cubed ham
1 large onion, diced
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. white sugar
1/4 c. black molasses
salt and pepper to taste
1 quart of water.

In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, Cook Ham bone or hocks and onion in water, bring to a boil. Add cubed ham, soaked drained beans, brown sugar, white sugar, and molasses. Stir together well. Pepper liberally. Add only enough salt to enhance flavor (remember many hams are already quite salty). Return pot to a low boil, then reduce to low, cover and cook for several hours, stirring occasionally. Additonal water may be added as
needed to reach the desired consistency. Add additional pepper and salt as desired.
