Texas Brownies Recipe

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup crisco
1 cup brewed strong coffee
1/4 cup dark unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the sugar in a heavy saucepan. Combine butter, shortening, coffee and cocoa and heat to boiling. pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar in bowl. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Mix well on high speed and pour into a well greased pan. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until done in center. While brownies bake, prepare the frosting.

Frosting:
2 tbs dark cocoa
1/4 cup milk
31/2 cups icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Combine the butter, cocoa and milk in saucepan and heat until boiling. Mix in the icing sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven. Cool, cut into bars.

If you don't have buttermilk, substitute 2 tsp vinegar or lemon juice into 1/2 cup milk.

Optional: For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.
