1 cup butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp. peppermint
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
dash of salt
red food colouring

Directions:
Directions:
In a large mixer bowl beat butter until softened. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, peppermint, and salt. beat well. Add flour and beat until well mixed. Divide dough in half. Stir food colouring into one half. Cover each and chill about 30 minutes. For each cookie, on a lightly floured surface, shape a tsp. of plain dough into a 4" rope. Repeat with a tsp. of red dough. Twist both ropes together, pinching ends to seal and forming into a cane shape. Place 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375ºF for 8 - 10 minutes, remove and cool.
