2/3 c. butter or Crisco
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. burnt sugar syrup
1 c. milk
2 tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 c. cake flour
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Make burnt sugar syrup by melting 1/2 c. sugar in cast iron or other heavy skillet, then adding 1/2 c. hot water and cooking until thick. Measure out for both cake and icing.

For cake, cream butter/Crisco and sugar. Add eggs, burnt sugar syrup. Sift together the dry ingredients and add alternately with milk. Stir in vanilla. Bake.

For icing, mix 1 T. butter, pinch of salt, 2 T. burnt sugar syrup, 2 cups powdered sugar, and 3 T. hot water until smooth.

The recipe for this cake, on a postcard from Daddy's Aunt Bessie, was dated 1913. It was Daddy's favorite cake, and Mother got the recipe from his mother and baked it for him when they were dating. She typed up the recipe as above, which varies slightly from the original, which had even more sugar (this is a sweet cake) and water instead of milk.
